Driving through any major city these days and you will see wind turbines and plenty of solar panels. Harvesting the energy of the sun and wind has saved companies millions of dollars, not to mention the fact that it is considered to be a clean energy source. Andy Wirth posted an article recently in the Reno Gazette-Journal about the Clean Power Plan. This plan would switch his city from the use of coal power over to renewable energy. Why does Wirth care so much about Reno and their energy sources? Well, Wirth currently runs the Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows ski resorts in California, which are in the Lake Tahoe region.

He was recently reported chair to the Reno airport, so clean energy is of a top concern for him. This busy man wants to open the businesses eyes on the power of using clean energy. City council voted on the plan with a favorable outcome. They are on board with Wirth’s plan and using only clean energy for the city. Coal has always been a great source to heat and provide energy with. It’s is readily available and it’s cost effective. The thing is that coal is very dirty when released into the atmosphere through smoke. It leaves black soot and this expels into the air and can be breathed into a person’s lungs. This can cause a plethora of issues.

Wirth is about nature and conservation and he feels that he is one step closer in the fight to ban the use of coal. Though he has a hard journey ahead of him, he meets difficulty with a head-on approach. It was just a couple years ago when Wirth was skydiving with some friends and his parachute malfunctioned. Andy Wirth severed his arm and didn’t think he would ever see the day when he could use this arm and hand again. Though there is some difficulty, he can use his arm, as it was reattached through surgery. Facing the people is much easier than the mountains he’s already overcome in his life. Certainly, renewable energy should be an easy choice for anyone.
