With the innovative technology of the future, we are seeing more and more people finding success in the causes they choose to advocate. This doesn’t mean that it isn’t hard work, it just makes it remarkably easier to reach people and most importantly raise awareness of the cause. Now, there are various organizations out there all representing different things, but what makes an advocacy group stand out is its financial influence on the government specifically. It requires not only this, but a sensitive heart as well. The Center for Victims of Torture headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota is a primary example of this. They are a group that directly helps those who have had the misfortune of being tortured, engaging in rehabilitation programs and the prevention of widespread torture throughout the world.
This gets down to some serious business because if you imagine being tortured, it is just about the most despicable thing that can happen to someone. This organization knows this, and pushes vehemently to stop the trend of war and free those captive. Not only this, but they are also engaging in ending torture on our own soil and overall throughout the world. They are a successful group which specializes in one of the darker sides of humanity, while shining their beacon of hope on all the rehabilitated victims of torture abuse.
There is however more than one type of torture. Physical torture is only one half of the pie. Mental torture can be found here in the United States through the government not upholding its pure responsibility of the constitution, thereby inflicting citizens with difficult and unlawful situations. Another effective fighter of this type of torture who advocates for human, civil, and migrant rights is the Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin are the Co-founders of Phoenix New Times and Village Voice Media. They have formed this to prevent situations similar to what happened to them. After they released that they were being targeted by a local Sherriff to seize their notes and articles, and were indeed arrested in their homes and taken separately to different stations where they were unjustly interrogated for free speech.
They were then soon released and pressed charges which resulted in the settlement of three million dollars, of which they funneled into the Frontera Fund. This fund was created to prevent negligence of the law and abuse from anyone with power, as well as general human and civil rights. This rather unsettling unconstitutional attempt of seizure resulted ironically in an organization that funnels resources and works with other people to ensure that all people’s rights are accounted for.
Larkin & Lacey know the value of free speech, and the power of words. Their generosity will never be forgotten, and has continued to ensure that justice and equality is the golden standard throughout the nation, but specifically Arizona. They are a remarkable team with the empathy and drive to instill effective results and will continue to in future endeavors!
