A cancer diagnosis is incredibly serious. It can throw an entire family into chaos while many important questions arise. What is the survival rate for this type of cancer? What types of treatments are available? How much will this all cost? What is the quality of life for the patient?
Fortunately, there are people like Eric Lefkofsky. The businessman has started five companies and is now the CEO of Groupon and co-founder of a company called Tempus. The successful entrepreneur now has plenty of money but it wasn’t always so easy. In a recent interview, he confessed to difficult times at the beginning of his professional life as he struggled to pay the bills and keep food on the table. Now, he says that he has too much money to spend and is focusing more on giving it away.
But he doesn’t just give his fortune away. He focuses on charitable endeavors to reduce unneeded human suffering across the planet. He and his wife have set up the Lefkofsky Foundation which is a charitable trust that infuses nonprofit organizations around the world with needed capital. The trust has helped over 50 worldwide organizations to date.
The Lefkofsky Foundation has joined the battle against cancer. The American Brain Tumor Association is a benefactor of the trust and is world renowned for being the first nonprofit organization to focus on brain cancers. The organization is there to support patients and caregivers when it pertains to diagnosis, treatment and care for various types of brain cancers.
The foundation also helps to fund the Johns Hopkins Sydney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center which focuses on pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadly diseases in the world and early diagnosis is critical for outcomes. Johns Hopkins is exploring progressive treatments and preventative care for pancreatic cancer patients. A pancreatic cancer vaccine may be on the horizon.
Eric Lefkofsky’s Tempus company also focuses on battling cancer. It does so on a genetic level as the company acknowledges that each cancer is individual. Individualized treatments are devised by understanding each cancer patients individual genetic profile.
